Martins have a deeper, fuller sound IMO. The only reason I'd pick a Taylor over a Martin is for the playability, they both sound awesome.
Anyhoo, I'd play as many guitars in your price range as possible. Depending on where you live, I'd check out at least 3-4 guitar shops in the area and play every acoustic they have. Besides Taylor and Martin I'd check out...
Takamine
Larrivee
Seagull
Guild
i feel 100% the opposite. taylor's feel akward on my lap and in my hands. However martins feel like butter. no matter how bad i am everythign i seemed to play on the D35 sounded great.
Speenis wrote:If you want to just play it unplugged, a dreadnought-shaped guitar without a cutaway will have the fullest sound...but if you want to be able to solo I'd get a cutaway
you can't hear the sound between a full dread and a cutaway dread
but i agree, get a dread. and having the electronics in it wont really affect sound either. but it is something else to pay for and maintain. So If i were getting a new guitar I would just get a full dread no cutaway no electronics.

If you are looking in the $700 to $1000 range, I really don't think you should look any farther than here:

That is a great deal, and you will not have to worry about getting ripped off. The guy is very legit. The guitar will be exactly as it is described. i would buy it.

Yeah, I've played a 410 and a 410CE and you can definitely tell the difference. And physically, it makes sense.

would that Larrivee be considered a dread? i don't really know what the qualifications are.. but that one looks a little smaller than other guitars.

The one I linked to is not a dreadnought.

that is an OM body shape. With Larrivee's patented bracing, my OM sounds louder and bassier than most dreads (minus Martins). The Larrivee dreads boom with power.

a variety of wood, technically a abnormality in the growth pattern of the wood, typically found in spruce.
it has no effect on the sound but it can be absolutely gorgeous on a top, i.e. kahns baby that i wish was my baby
