Strats. How many great guitarists played Strats? Yeah, that's right...what has Clapton settled on after all his years of playing? A Strat...Les Paul's suck my balls. You can't get a clean sound out of them to save your life. You can do anything with a Strat. I just picked up another one a couple days ago that I think I'm set on. It's a '60's series Custom Shop Relic. That thing will smoke any Les Paul you throw at it. I also can't say enough about my SRV. That guitar just rips. I'm a minimalist when it comes to effects though...here's my rig:
Pedaltrain Pedalboard
Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2
Fulltone Fulldrive 2
Fulltone Fat Boost
Hughes and Kettner Tube Rotosphere MKII
Dunlop Wah-Wah Classic
Boss DD-6 digital delay
Boss Tuner pedal
all this goes into a Fender Super Reverb amp. All this Gibson/Marshall crap is just that. Overly grunged out crap tones. You can do that with Fender stuff, but you can also do everything else. And for the record, I'm more into electric than acoustic. Both are great and there are times where I certainly enjoy acoustic more, but I'm much more of an electric player now and I love it that way.

You can get some amazing distortion with a Marshall/Gibson combo. But if you want a priceless example of a Gibson/Marshall combo hard at work listen to early Allman Brothers. Dicky plays on a G/M combo and it sounds real nice. I am still a strat man none the less. They just feel right to me. But I guess it's what you grow up on.

heh elliot, your strat comments are funny. you can get a better clean sound out of a les paul then distortion from a strat! it sounds awful!! single coils are not meant for distortion!
dont get me wrong - strats have the best clean sound PERIOD - i just think that les pauls sound as a whole blows them away.
id take an SRV or an eric clapton strat though
