Do you put your guitar in its case every night?
15% humidity is much to low. At that rate your guitar is drying out. I suggest you go to the Taylor website and read up on humidity before you start to have problems. While typically temperature isn't what causes problems extreme highs and lows in the temp can do damage. Also you need to understand the correlation between temperature and relative humidity.phatnev wrote:I dont mean to be a dick but it all depends on how nice of an axe you have. Like my Taylor 414rce is what I consider to be a gorgeous guitar, and that said I keep it in its case....if you have an all real wood guitar do yourself and keep it in the case, but if you dont feel free to keep it out. I know I left mine in the case, but the case open and the axe propped up and 3 months of that were enuogh to cause it to dry out a little bit. I now keep a humidifier in it at all times Im not playing, and its also in the case when Im not jammin. Humidity pays alot of importance in it too. It has to be pretty much at an exact 15% range of humidity for it not to damage it, although temperature isnt much of a factor
Relative humidity measures the amount of moisture in the air compared to the amount it is capable of holding. The temp plays a role in this because at warmer temperatures the capacity to hold moisture is increased. Lets say you have one room that is 65 degrees and one that is 90 degrees and they both have the same amount of moisture. The RH humidity in the 90 deg room is going to be lower because it has a greater capacity to hold moisture (make sense?). At any rate 15% is way to low. Just as a reference the RH in the Taylor factory is maintained at 47%.
i agree....if you have an expensive geetar than it's better to be safe than sorry because climate control does effect the density of the guitar...it's just a given...usually, i put mine in the case when i'm at work for the day or away for the weekend...otherwise i'll leave it out on the stand while i'm at home, so i can pick it up whenever i feel like it....just my opinion thoughphatnev wrote:I dont mean to be a dick but it all depends on how nice of an axe you have. i put it in my case when im not playing it for the sole reason that it takes up less space, having a guitar out and a case on the floor is like having two guitars cluttering up my room

yeah, i think he meant 50%... I read somewhere on the Taylor site that you should keep it between 45-55%hcole wrote:15% humidity is much to low. At that rate your guitar is drying out. You laminant Mutherfockers have nothing to worry about except to protect that solid top if applicable. Those of us with solid wood guitars have to keep the humidity between 40 and 50 percent or it'll fuck your investment in the ass- hard.
I've seen the dead instruments that come into the local music stores. They're not pretty.

Yup I think it all depends on the quality and type of wood your guitar is made from. I have a Martin DC1E and the first two weeks that I brought it home, I left it on my stand. Then My strings, namely B and e started buzzing. I said WTF? Took it to a guitar shop and they said "Dude you have to keep it in a case witha humidifier"! They also showed me where the soundhole was shrinking and sinking in...I got a humidifier and case that beeeyitch every minute that I'm not playing it. However, demographics play a crucial role. I live in Michigan where you get shocked everytime you touch something metal...So it is dry as F%#$ here. In the summer I know it won't be....Then I'll be dealing with a whole other problem....

I barely take my electric out of the case...haha.dmbguitar718 wrote:I remember a couple years back when I got my first guitar, the guy told me to put the guitar in its case every night. Is this standard practice? I mean I still do 95% of the time, but I just want to know if its really necesary. I do understand if you leave it out for a very extended period of time, it will become warped.
Thoughts?

i put mine back in the case every night but that's just because i don't have a stand...i don't feel comfortable with leaving her leaning against the wall. Leaving your guitar out should be fine though.
