Making it in the music world, or at least being successful is so hard. I mean I don't want to ruin anyone's dreams but these days it takes a lot more luck then skill. I see amazing guitarists barely scraping by and power chord Good Charolette players making millions by being hypocritical. Life ain't fair. I wish you all good luck, but seriously, good guitar players are a dime a dozen. You really have to have something special. I mean I love guitar, but I know I'll never get anywhere with it. It will always just be something I do, for fun.

I agree with both of ya...It is ashame b/c there are a lot of incredible players out there..I guess you need a tragic life story to be able to write the songs that people will listen to..I dunno..Me though, for the moment, would like to just get on an open mic and play...I just wish I knew if I am ready for that step or not...ah well

unfortunatly the only real way to find that out is to go out and do it. Making mistakes is part of life, the wise learn from their mistakes.

Is a risk man, I'm not denying that. But I think it's a risk worth taking.

i would NEVER make it as a guitarist. too horrible. maybe as a singer/songwriter, but i think it's a hobby that's just taken up most of my time and money.

i'm fortunate enough to have a lot of passions, though, so i'm pursuing those because they seem a lot more viable, i.e. writing and film (but both are still pretty hard).

don't know, we'll see. :) the problem is that since i have so many other things i enjoy, i never really get proficient with one. lol.

you are completely wrong here. there are so many bands now because it costs almost nothing to make a cd. so record labels are making shitloads. there were only good bands that recorded back in the vinyl days because vinyl was pressed. it would cost a ton more. so record labels only recorded good artists like the beatles and led zeppelin.

so his and my chances of making it are much greater. blink 182 has 5 note intros and 4 chord choruses. they made it. you just have to do something that has not been done before.

has not been done before? would be hard to do that.

i don't think it's necessarily what hasn't been done before, but how you take what has been done and inject your own personality and style into it.

Three things:
Ambition, ambition, ambition.

You need to have presence and you need to be able to make people like you. Whenever you sell your art it instantly becomes more about business than passion.

Blink 182 did something never done before? Ummm... Greenday did it years earlier and a lot better.
If the music business was known for one thing it would be recycling. They recycle the same shit over and over again. Why would we have the Latin craze or Boy Band craze? It all follows trends and the execs put out a bunch of parrots to make more money. You are right in that it's easier to become a "professional" musician these days.
