thanks for the advice souna.
this is what i've been struggling with - finding a good method for attacking the theory of music for the guitar. you make a good point about looking at learning it visually. i'll check out that site, and will definitely start reading some theory books.
i think one important use of being able to read sheet is timing, so that you can perform with others. but i'm sooo far off from that. and who knows, maybe that part will come out of learning theory as well.
i originally started this thread to get people to share their experiences and how they've gone into learning to play. i guess i should have put that in originally.
so, how've you guys dunnit huh?

well I started off with metallica which gave me a really good hang on timing.but with time and the loss of my band(too long story) I sort of lost my ability to keep time but now I got it back again. the trick is play the songs you learn with the record and try to get a metronome. everything comes with practice don't get too frustrated cos that's the way it works you'll have periods of extreme improvment and other periods where whatever you do nothing will comeout. but you should know there are 3 fundamentals to playing music NOTES, TECHNIC and TIMING they have the same importance. so try to do drum exercices with your metronome which can be boring but its sort of important. well that was long peace out
