i've said it before and i will say it again: when you are looking at just the key of the song, its the same thing. but when you play the scales they are different. a mode is something completely different from the key. so by saying "that song is in Bm" or "no it's in D" just reinforces the awful idea that you are restricted to playing just one scale or mode throughout the entire song.
Coming from a piano player of over 12 years, I would strongly disagree with your statement. But that's just because piano is a different instrument than a guitar, and a song in D on piano is MUCH different than a song in Bm, no matter what notes are in the key. They are relative majors/minors to each other, but certainly NOT the same key. It's a lot more pronounced on piano though, so that's why I feel this way.

i play piano too, and it still seems that you are missing the point

on paper they are the same, but in actual playing YES they are different. it just depends which note you use as the tonic

Oops! I meant to say I wouldn't say minor keys are sad. Typo.

On paper as in what notes have sharps and flats? Well of course they're the same, that's the point of relative majors and minors. However, even on paper, songs in relative majors/minors will have different root notes and will just flow very differently. If you'll notice on a piece of sheet music (Baroque tend to use this more) that switches from a relative minor to a relative major in the middle of a song (or vice versa), they have to be distinctly marked as different keys.

Nitpick alert! It's actually in B minor.
nitpick alert! its the same damn thing
SAME NOTES DIFFERENT KEY!!!!!!!!!!!!! THERE IS A DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!
If you don't think so your credibility go's down in my book. Oh and it is in Bm. What chord does the whole chorus progression revolve around not to mention end on? Ummmmmmmmmm...Bm! This is simple ass shit. For someone who nows their theory you sure come off as amatuer sometimes.

If you have one, pull out a piece of sheet where that happens. Any time the key changes to/from relative major/minor, it *looks* like it's in a different key (but with the same key signature, i.e. double bars, new time/clef markings, etc.).

But to be honest, I don't see what the argument is here. We both know that there is a difference between a relative major and minor, although in guitar playing it is not always evident. Your simplification that they're in essence the same key makes sense to a person new to theory because that's what they appear to be. How about we rephrase that to "It doesn't matter whether it's D or Bm because these two keys have the same notes." or something to that effect
