lessons or no lessons

phone book, look on the internet, if there is a performance center or concert hall in your town, ask there. if there is a college with a music program in your town, thats always a good bet

NEVER get lessons from a guitar center though

a lot of colleges have string instrument courses. i took 2 semesters of guitar at nyu. padded the GPA a little too! and it's cool, because at least in my case, the classes are 1 on 1, and my teacher was a grad student who spent his life studying music, and built all his guitars himself.

I just got my first guitar this weekend and I'm gonna try to learn by myself. Spend a lot of time over Christmas Break, (benefits of College, yay). I'm going to get the Fender Beginner DVD at Guitar Center http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid ... id/961321/. I think it would seem like more of an accomplishment to say that you tought yourself than to get lessons; but I'm not downing anybody that takes lessons, just my opinion.

Lol, technicalities, I think we all know that a live instructor and a DVD is not the same thing. Otherwise what else would you consider learning yourself, just plucking strings and figuring out what notes they are?

I taught myself guitar. I knew music first though. but yeah, no real help in the beginning at all.

I haven't had to read sheet music for over 5 years now, and that was for a totally different instrument. I'm a visual learner, so seeing someone playing helps me much more than reading things to figure it out.

I haven't taken a single lesson in my life regarding music or computer related stuff , so it can be archived with a little work , what you do is read a little on your own , then along the way you'll pick up alot of stuff b4 you even realise it

But im sure you'll have some use out of that DVD , atleast i hope so otherwise you would be wasting money :lol:

To tell the truth I started playing guitar for DMB. I learned how to read tab and started learning dave songs. then learned names of chords I have been playing...So, I am weird

Yea partly why I got guitar was to play some of daves stuff, but I have to work up to all that first. You can learn bits and pieces along the way, but I think having a DVD or lessons are a way to try to jump start learning.

Yeah its a jumpstart , are you ashamed of it ? You seem like it , there is absolutely nothing wrong with buying a lesson DVD , just practice alot and you'll be a hell of player b4 you know it , but it does take an effort , if you're willing to do that then you don't have a problem

Nah I'm not ashamed of it at all. I really want to learn how to play, so I'll do whatever it takes to reach my goal. I'm gonna have a whole bunch of time off soon, like 3 and a half weeks, so it will be a great time to start. I learned a little bit on Friday Night & Saturday and made my left hand fingers all sore, so I need my calluses to build all up. Once I get done with finals on Thursday I'll be back home ready to crank up the learning.

I tried to play some tabs online, one of which was sweet home alabama, and I'm so bad I just laugh at myself. All in due time, I needed a new hobby. =)

Don't get discouraged if you laugh at yourself or if others are for that matter , you gotta remember that everyone has been there , even Dave , no one just picks up a guitar and know how to play , so all musicians can relate to exactly what you mean
