here's something fun...D E F G A B C D...what is that? A C scale that starts and ends on D! hmmm...maybe this is Dorian mode??? And how about all those pop songs that are in the key of D maybe but have a very prominent C in them...that's a, gasp, flat 7 basically, or you could say you're in G myxolydian...what? c d e f G (5=myxolydian) a b c...G A B C D E F G...G myxolydian...very common in pop...when you find this, it makes for a more pleasurable soloing experience...wooo...I think...I'm not good at explaining this stuff...I just do it.

matty, thanks man...this site looks awesome... can you explain what the 1,3,5,9 circled numbers are? are they frets or what?? i'm just a little confused, the site is new to me...any help would be awesome on this....thanks again!
way off. those numbers are "scale degrees" like in C, C=1, D=2, E=3, F=4, G=5, A=6, B=7, C=8, D=9 and so on.
grock what exactly are "scale degrees"? my knowledge is pretty much elementary when it comes to this stuff, but any additional info you could provide would be great...if it's too hard to explain, don't bother..thank you though
can you give me an example of what the layout would be for D, like for C you wrote "C, C=1, D=2, E=3, F=4, G=5, A=6, B=7, C=8, D=9"...i just wanna have the two to compare

maybe somebody can confirm if these major scale degrees are correct, according to the scale site:

C, C=1, D=2, E=3, F=4, G=5, A=6, B=7, C=8, D=9
D, D=1, E=2, F=3, G=4, A=5, B=6, C=7, D=8, C=9
E, E=1, F=2, G=3, A=4, B=5, C=6, D=7, C=8, D=9
F, F=1, G=2, A=3, B=4, C=5, D=6, C=7, D=8, E=9

Zentao.com is actually a real good site, but you have to stick with it and do the lessons. i think i did like six lessons and then i put it in my favorites and haven't really hit that sight since(lazzzzyyy aaaassss) :)

I like the Guitar Grimore books, but i guess you can find all that shit on the net now

i hadn't seen this thread before, and i just read it, and i think i'm in the same boat as tjmac - i've been around music all my life, and reading what grock wrote made at lot click. the only thing i have problems with, aside from being stuck at college with absolutely no money and a broken G string till friday, is moving "out" of a scale, if that makes any sense. if i'm playing in C, down around the 3rd fret, i get messed up if i move up like 2 or 3 frets, and i dont know where to 'build" the scale off again to keep going, if that means anything. and i have a hard time changing keys, too. i was jamming with this guy up here who knows his stuff, and he mentioned "leading in" notes, to the new root, but we didnt get to jam again, so i'm still a little lost. thanks again grock, you da man

checkii wrote:It's cool to hate on Chosta, I get it. But the prejudice that people take into his posts makes people so stupid it's hilarious to read. I take every gif I watch (which is A LOT) with a humongous grain of salt. But I don't let that grain of salt get into my eye and blind me to whatever truth can be found in what I'm watching. He is not any worse than any other poster here, and the people who claim he is just don't know what they're talking about. The demonization has gotten ridiculously out of hand.
