It all depends on your style. I would definitely reccomend getting a single great guitar before getting multiple guitars though.
I personally will probably end up with at least 4 acoustics before it's all said and done:
1 12 string
1 dreadnaughtish strummer
1 fingerpicker
1 extra for alt tunings
That's definitely the minimum for acoustics. Another strong possibility would be a bari.
And then there are the electrics of course.

12 strings arent that expensivescott_fash wrote:12 strings are great if your jamming with friends or just by yourself. Certain songs don't sound good but a lot of dave songs sound real cool on a 12. They are expensive but if your a serious enough guitar player and like dave's genre of music then it's worth it.

i have 2 guitars at the moment, my takemine g-series (that guitar has taken a hell of a beating, i'd recommend it to anyone who wants a good affordable guitar (300$)) and my danelectro '56 U2 reissue.
i had a 300$ fender 12-string acoustic, but i traded it in on the danelectro. my take on 12 strings is this:if you can afford it, buy one. they are great to have lying around so when you get in the mood to play one you have it. my main problem was that i wasn't playing it enough to make having one worthwhile. if i had the cash though, i'd definitely buy a 12. in your case though, i might buy a really nice 6 string. its always better to have a good main axe than several different ones. invest in an instrument you'll play a lot.

- Political views: The rent is too damn high.
i only paid 205 for my 12 string... its not great but then again im not willing to pay the amount for a good one- so it suits its purpose, stays in tune, and sounds good
by the way i got my 6 string used off of a friend for 75 bucks, neither he nor i knew if it was good at all at the time... dont let price fool you, there are plenty of deals out there
