the only importance it holds is if you had really abnormally small hands and you wernt able to get your fretting hand around the neck properly to reach the strings.

Like you said, work with what you've got...

My hands are on the small side (not much bigger than my petite, 5'2" wife's hands -- stretching from pinky to thumb, I can reach from A to " on my keyboard... and my middle finger doesn't even fully span 5 keys from tip to palm), but I've always hooked my thumb around to fret F, F#, G (etc.) on the low E string.

(sorry for the key measurements - no ruler nearby!)
