I concur, if you have it you would know it by now. Also, perfect pitch is not some holy grail among musicians and it cannot be learned. Relative pitch on the other hand can be learned and, in the context of music, it accomplishes the same thing.slimerdmb24 wrote:I too doubt it. It's not common. I must have perfect pitch. I've never known what perfect pitch is until now, but I have had the ability to do what fatjack said (the whole train whistle thing) almost as long as I have been a musician for simple reason of having played every single note and in every single key so often that I can judge their pitchs by ear.
Even trickier is the ability to know perfect tone (440 hz) for every note. Even I cannot do that consistently.
and perfect pitch isn't just being able to hear what note it is, you also haer whether or not its perfectly tuned.
having perfect pitch is kind of a blessing and a curse at the same time. its cool to be able to hear so well, but from people i have met that have it, they say that when a note is even SLIGHTLY out of tune, its very annoying to them

If perfect pitch entails perfect tone as well, then I guess FJ is right and I do not have it. I can sometimes tell if a note is way flat or way sharp using the same method I described (using a reference point in a song I have listened to many times) but not intuitively. If I hear a train whistle it does take me several seconds to figure the pitch and tone by pure deduction.
I should also mention that perfect tone is usually only honed in perfessional singers, who become accustomed to generating perfect tone as well as perfect pitch themselves from experience without depending on tuners. People like Julie Andrews and Pavarati are examples.
Nevertheless, being able to hear pitchs and identify them is an invaluable skill that will cause you guitar abilities to grow exponentially. That is why I am often reluctant to tab out guitar parts for people that request them. I know how important honing that skill is for guitarists and want everybody to get exposure to it.
Bands love having someone like that. If you want to join a band and can hear one of their songs, know the key without much difficulty, and plow away with a solo or a lead part for the song, the band will have a much greater chance of wanting you around more.

Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead

thats why its not perfect pitch. people with perfect pitch dont need a reference, they are able to hear each tones individual "color" so to speak.Davy28 wrote:If perfect pitch entails perfect tone as well, then I guess FJ is right and I do not have it. and you cant "hone" it. your example of those vocalists is an example of relative pitch again

i'm rather content with my penis size...dunno about you
i think you're one of those people who try to bring down other's because you're sensitive about a possible diminished package.

Hehe. Paul Schaffer has perfect pitch. It's an ignorant staement, I know, but he doesn't look like he would.

I'll add my 2 cents on the topic.Grandpagotgame wrote:guys get back on song keys, does anyone have anything enlightening at all to say about them?
In general I agree with Fatjack and Shane. Different keys based off the same scale are relative and don't imply any intrinsic quality or mood.
That's not to say it's wrong to think that way, there are plenty of songwriters who relate keys with mood. Back in the day flat keys were associated with hell while sharp keys were associated with heaven. E major was considered the most divine key because it was the sharpest in common use at the time.
