I mainly use EF#BEBE anymore-

I used to use many more, but I got tired of buying new strings every week

ummm, yea. I stick with the good ol' standard and drop D witht he occasional C. I much rather just put a capo on my guitar then mess with the strings. 3,5, and 8 are my favorite capo positions.

how do i know which strings get raised and which get lowered?

by the note names...

if the lowered note is closer to the original note, tune down, if not tune up.

learn the nots scale (say one octave of a piano) and it will be pretty easy to know which are where in relation to another :wink:
