most overrated guitarist
eer, you can't remark on his speed. he may have been the quickest with the guitar during his time, but you surely can't say professional guitarists of this day don't match up with him. c'mon, i mean haven't you heard halen's eruption. i'm not saying halen is better, but he surely matches up with hendrix.

actually SRV couldnt read musid either and hes better than hendrix soooo...kopie101 wrote: jimi was actually a more amazing player than dave, claptop, van halen, page, and more because jimi didnt know how to read music. everything jimi did was from his ear. he was never thinking "ok, i need to be in key of A minor without doing this...yadda yadda" he was thinking "ok, this needs to sound like this..." and he played it. jimi knew the guitar like no other.

Looks like we need a tally here even though it seems like Van Halen is getting shat on. There needs to be some kind of definition here, sorry that I'm an english major-that's how I think-cause you can't knock all the legends because we still hear their stuff for a reason, being that they changed music or did some creative act that hasn't been forgotten.

By your definition of Dave as a rhythm player is concerned, Hendrix, Cobain and Clapton, were all better rhythm players. Their songs are all riffs, and they play their own solos. Hendrix and Cobain were in 3 man bands, and it takes a lot to be able to lay down a solo that is good enough to stand without a rythm guitar. I'd even lump Johnny Reznik in with that.
Clapton is amazing. From acoustic blues to Psychadelic rock, the man has done it all. He was in 8 bands during the 70's. When the beatles needed a really good solo, they asked Clapton to do it. cuz he's amazing. Just cuz he's a little tamer in his later years (and losing an infant son can kinda change your entire perspective) don't dismiss what he did. The wah work he's done on songs like White Room are staples of technique. and surely we can all look at Unplugged and recognize it as amazing. Layla is another amazing one. Just imagine dave taking Lover Lay Down and turning into a death metal song. That's the diversity that is clapton.
Hendrix was perhaps the greatest ear that rock has ever seen. He'd just play and bend/slide notes to where he wanted them. and to say that Dave's rhythm playing is better is rediculous. Jimi would play riffs and never think twice about it. Watch old videos of Paul McCartney, or Sting and the way they can play bass and sing, and Jimi is playing solos while singing.
Cobain rescued us from hair metal. 'Nough said.
As for over-rated guitarists, i hate to be the first to say it, but in all reverence, i gotta vote for Dave. Sure he is interesting and darn good, but it's not that much different than Hendrix rhythms on acoustic guitar, minus the awesome solos and awareness. I don't mean to ruffle feathers.
Of course he's not "way" overrated like Hair metal rippers.

Most overrated?
I don't think Yngwie counts because he's out of the mainstream.
I'd have to put Eddie up there in the overrated category. He's loud and fast but that's about it.
Slash is a good guitarist ... And GnR is NOT Hair Metal. That's Whitesnake and Poison and shit like that.
Clapton is God with a guitar. The guy can play ANYTHING ... If you think he's overrated, try to find the Watchtower MP3 of him and Lenny Kravitz ... The song gave me goosebumps ... Clapton just fucking SHREDS on that song and his solos are absolutely perfect. Clapton understand melody and harmony ... he GETS it.
Cobain was a singer/songwriter that could play guitar. I don't consider him overrated as a guitarist because I don't really consider him that great a guitarist.
I think about guys from the 80s like Eric Johnson and Joe Satriani and how good they were ... and how much music has changed since then.
You all are going to think I'm crazy but my vote is for Jimmy Page.
Yes he's good. No doubt ... but he's not nearly as good as some people would have me believe. I had a long debate in college about this ... Some guy believed that Page was better than Clapton because LZ had sold so many albums.
Clapton has done blues, reggae, rock, pop, religious, and god knows what else and Jimmy Page has pretty much done one thing throughout his career with LZ.

Dave Matthews.
Seriously.
I get sick of people ( My stupid friends, who suck at guitar by the way.)
Saying that Dave is one of the best ever, his songs are hard blah blah blah The Stone is harder than Neon.
Ok, I hate John Mayer. But the Stone Harder than Neon? Have you motherfucks ever tried to play Neon? or the Stone even? I mean, Maybe if you wouldn't suck you would notice, but you can't... because you suck.
Stuff like that, everyone suckin Daves cock off, just because he rocks out with his cock out.
But yeah that wasn't really directed at anyone
That's basically the convo between me and my stupid, stupid friends.
Dave is one of the best at what he does.

The actual riff of Jimi thing is exactly that, a tribute to Hendrix. The lyrics themselves are about the positive effects of drugs, but the actual song was called jimi thing because it was a hendrix-esque riff.jsgksu wrote:Jimi is not overrated I dont think, hes deffinatley better than Dave.
And NJPearce, Jimi Thing is not about Hendrix, just so you know.
