the only reason ben harper is where he is now is b/c he opened for dmb in 2000...he's just another dmb pet-project...the dmb world started making him out to be the latest and greatest after that tour...he's ok, no doubt, but his grandeur if you'd call it that is blown WAY out of proportion. I've seen harper and mayer, and let me tell you...I was at the show friday and the show monday, and besides no such thing which just felt tired for good reason, he put every single bit of himself into those songs. monday was just insane...ben harper would be in awe if he was there, rest assured...

thats pretty much a load of crap gcom. by word of mouth is why ben harper is where he is day, and there wouldn't be word of mouth if it wasn't for him being the great musicial person that he is. you go to his websites and forums you will hardly ever see people talk about dave, even in the non ben harper forum. i would say more but i do not feel good hehgcom007 wrote:the only reason ben harper is where he is now is b/c he opened for dmb in 2000...he's just another dmb pet-project...the dmb world started making him out to be the latest and greatest after that tour...he's ok, no doubt, but his grandeur if you'd call it that is blown WAY out of proportion. no one said a thing about him in the DMB community til 2000, and then all of the sudden they thought he was great outta nowhere...trust me, I was there, I witnessed it w/ my eyes...most people that you meet who are big music fans really aren't that into him. he writes some good songs, but he's really nothing that special.dustin wrote:thats pretty much a load of crap gcom. by word of mouth is why ben harper is where he is day, and there wouldn't be word of mouth if it wasn't for him being the great musicial person that he is. you go to his websites and forums you will hardly ever see people talk about dave, even in the non ben harper forum. i would say more but i do not feel good hehgcom007 wrote:the only reason ben harper is where he is now is b/c he opened for dmb in 2000...he's just another dmb pet-project...the dmb world started making him out to be the latest and greatest after that tour...he's ok, no doubt, but his grandeur if you'd call it that is blown WAY out of proportion. Gee, sounds kinda like the hype/rise to fame mayer got in the dmb community before everyone listened to his lyrics.gcom007 wrote:no one said a thing about him in the DMB community til 2000, and then all of the sudden they thought he was great outta nowhere...trust me, I was there, I witnessed it w/ my eyes...most people that you meet who are big music fans really aren't that into him. he writes some good songs, but he's really nothing that special.
Ben did get a boost from the dmb crowd. But dont you think Mayer did too? And so what...? Plenty of people open for dmb and dont get anywhere near as popular as ben harper. Obviously he's got something (on his own) that appeals to a large audience. This is one of the weakest points I've seen you make, Elliot.

I would say Mayer gets a heck of a lot more crap in the DMB community than anyone, and I'm not saying it's a universal thing in regards to harper, I'm saying that the dmb community made him into a hero after he opened for them, dmb boards make him out to be a lot more than he really is, that's my point.mbgreen wrote:Gee, sounds kinda like the hype/rise to fame mayer got in the dmb community before everyone listened to his lyrics.gcom007 wrote:no one said a thing about him in the DMB community til 2000, and then all of the sudden they thought he was great outta nowhere...trust me, I was there, I witnessed it w/ my eyes...most people that you meet who are big music fans really aren't that into him. he writes some good songs, but he's really nothing that special.

there's no good place to start...my three biggest influences/hero's I'd say are Eric Clapton, James Taylor and Sting. I listen to so much stuff though...I've got atleast 400-500 CD's at this point...but if I can have my pick, give me the guitar solo's of clapton, the lyrical imagery of taylor, and the musical songwriting of sting and I'll be a happy camper...mbgreen wrote:Who are they into, out of curiosity? it's perfectly founded, the only thing that's truly unfounded here is the perception of reality in DMB-fandom world...fatjack wrote:elliot's point isn't all that unfounded. i had never heard of harper until i got on these boards
