fatjack i've got a good question for you.
i'm not sure of the full story but i assume you're in school to study music/guitar/something like that.
i graduated from UMD in engineering last month and am now working as a full-time mechanical engineer at a local company in D.C. i've had two summer long internships in engineering so i know what the daily 9-5 life of an engineer is like.
i want to work in the industry for no more than 1-2 years, then head back to school for an advanced degree. thing is i've always wanted to go to school for music too, primarily to study jazz and blues.
do you know of any universities where i could study engineering full time for my grad degree and study music as say a second degree, or something in my spare time?
i realize you may have no clue what schools have engineering, and if this is the case, what are your views on studying music as a part time thing? additionally, if i went to school full time for music, can i concentrate in jazz/blues? what schools are best in this field?
anyone else with good insight please chime in...

i can tell you some schools that have a good program in either areas of study: northwestern in chicago has a good engineering program, as does Texas A&M. i know that UT Austin has a really good jazz program, so does tulane in new orleans. i'm not too familiar with schools on the coasts though, you'll have to consult someone else
and as for schools that have a good program for both, the only one i can think of is where i attend: the university of alabama. not only do we have programs in both, but they are both ranked pretty high in the nation.
i may not be too knowledgable about a lot of schools, but i can tell you one thing, very rarely will you be able to treat music as a secondary degree. sure you can take classes all you want, but it would be very difficult to get a degree in music while seriously studying something else, ESPECIALLY if you are getting a graduate degree in something else. music schools tend to immerse their students with study: i have so many music classes each semester that i barely have space for even one non-music class. even if you could manage to get a degree in music along with your engineering masters, i dont think it would be something as specified as jazz, it would have to be just general music because that degree tends to have less requirements.
i dont want to crush your hopes, but you may just be taking music classes on the side for fun...
and you can ask me for more specific details about the programs at U of A if you'd like. btw, what type of engineering are you in?

thanks for the insights.......i graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering, and will probably go back to school in mechanical/aerospace engineering. i currently work for a company outside of D.C. (http://www.sigmaspace.com)
then again, i may be looking for a career change at that point, so maybe music fulltime.

Fat, i'm having trouble with the tapping part in phunkdafied. Is the tab on mxtabs correct on that part? Specifically, the notes on the high e string. The tab says to tap them, then pull off to the open high e, but that doesn't sound right. Do you fret the high e somewhere else? In the video is seems Justin's hands are doing more than what the tab suggests.
