fingerpicking and stuff like that...

Unread post by grazetreat » Wed Dec 17, 2003 9:05 pm

sitting around with nothing to do so i'm looking for some suggestions. I've been playing guitar for maybe 6 or 7 months, and I'm looking for some songs to practice. Maybe some stuff that is mainly instrumental (sorta like the one sweet world intro or the intro to stairway...). Nothing too tough, I haven't been playing long enough, but somethiing that sounds cool and wlll give me a little bit of a challenge. Any ideas (tabs would rock too :))?

don't be intimidated by it...there's two basic chord formations, and then play your heart out in e major...my advice is to get the structure of the song down, the pick it apart...you'll learn a world from a song like that

You could always go with some Dust in the Wind....nice way to learn some Travis picking.

I think that is what that technique is called??

only problem with nick drake is you have to retune your guitar every other song. ;)

Check out some of the song lessons they have on guitarnoise.com. They have some good fingerpick songs like Blackbird as well as some other good stuff to build up your repetoire. I spent last night learning the arrangement of Driver Eight. It's a good site if your like me and have only been playing like 6 months or a year. The dude explains things really well.

Signe from the Eric Clapton Unplugged album is a really cool instrumental...it's fingerpicked too. It's not too tough to learn if you know the basics of fingerpicking.

I can't think of any songs right off the bat, but I will recommend you learn some common fingerpicking rolls that you could apply to anything. This was the first one I learned:
I'm just going to tab it out with open strings, then explain what fingers to use.
e:-0--------0-----
b:------0--------0-
g:----0--------0---
d:-0------0--------
a:-----------------
E:-----------------
Alright, now for an explanation. The bass notes (on the D string) can be moved to lower strings if needed. For this roll, you'll use your thumb to hit the D and G strings, your middle finger for the e string, and your first finger (or pointer, whatever) for the B string.
When you get this down it's a really natural pattern you can apply to most all open chords.

Code: Select all

e:-0--------0-----
b:------0--------0-
g:----0--------0---
d:-0------0--------
a:-----------------
E:-----------------

i always learned to use the thumb for E A and D strings, pointer for the G, middle for the B and ring for the e. this is standard fingerpicking, or classical fingerpicking. other types are "Travis" picking, Chet Atkins Style (which is what you illustrated above), etc. which are all variations where you use less fingers.

but less fingers mean less fun so i say use the all! most guitarist will use four fingers to fingerpick but of course there are always some oddballs out there. but it's like fretting without ever using the pinky. you're just limiting yourself if you use less fingers.

sometimes you'll see tab have little p, i, m, and a around notes. this is for the thumb, index, middle, and ring of the picking hand respectively. the reason the letters don't line up is cuz it stands for the spanish words for the fingers. (another worthless fact to amaze your friends with)
