When I was just starting, technically I still am, I had a hard time with barre chords but you will get it eventually. One thing that I noticed was that with 'open' chords I usually cradled the guitar between my thumb and pointer but when I went to do a barre chord I placed my thumb directly behind the neck using it to push the neck to the fretting fingers. I heard someone term this as a "Strong Wrist" position since you have to curl your wrist underneath the neck more as appossed to having your wrist relaxed cradleing the guitar. Tip1: Always fret right behind the fret itself because you will need less pressure to have the note ring out. Tip2: Practice all the barre chords in the 1st couple of frets once you can do those all the other ones will be a piece of cake. Tip3: I liked barre chords because you could get the "XXXXXX" chuck sound real easy, good for complicating rythem patterns. Hope this helps. And I'm spent.

Everybody always asks me how she's doing. Has she really lost her mind? I said "I couldn't tell you, I've lost mine."

Yah I've seen people try to play barre chords with out that extra support and they just end up muting half the chord.
