Cortez the Killer

Unread post by fraggle » Tue Dec 09, 2003 9:00 am

Anyone have a good tab for Neil Young - Cortez the Killer?

If not, a tab of what Warren Haynes is doing at CP would be a good start, since it is pretty much what Neil Young is doing....

well. Neil plays it in double drop D. Both e strings dropped to d. But you can play it in standard. The prgression is just Em -> D -> Am7. And just go to town with the Em Pentatonic and G major scales.

keep practicing those scales :) Just learn the Em Pentatonic and G major scales the whole way down the fretboard. and learn it so you can go to the notes without even thinking about it. then just listen and try to copy some of neils riffs. the scale book I have is the guitar grimoire: scales and modes. It has pretty much every scale known to man in it. I'm just being able to be comfortable with playing lead, and all you gotta do is learn those scales and try to copy some riffs.

I know the pentatonic. That one is fine. I just have trouble switching things up. In otherwords, I just play up and down, and just have trouble switching things up.

well, try sliding from one section of the fretboard to the next to make a good transition.

Scales shmales, I know tons of scales, but honestly most of the time when I solo, especially on Cortez, it's mostly playing what feels right, and what sounds right. I guess it's not a great habit, but the notes I'm playing are probably within the scale anyways, I've just developed my ear to be able to hear what sounds good within a song. By the way Cortez the Killer is one of my new favorite songs. Damn good tune.

Scales are important.

yeah, scales are important, but what you said is too. Being able to just let out what feels right and sounds right is great. I know I feel limited sometimes by just knowing the pents and majors. There are TONS of other scales out there that work also. And you're probably playing them without knowing it. which is aewsome :) aw hell, I'm just rambling.
