string gauge affecting the neck

Unread post by see you auntie » Sun Nov 30, 2003 12:54 am

in the endless quest to find our own tone, i've decided to turn to heavier strings, and see how they fare.

i have a '76 les paul custom that's always been set up with 9's or 10's, at the most. currently it's set up for 9's.

i realize that slapping .13's (a la SRV) on there would traumatize the guitar, and i know that you have to adjust the trussrod to compensate for the extra tension.

from what i've researched, srv's stratocasters were basically stock, with the exception of his frets, which were supposedly bass frets, to emulate a scalloped neck (this information is not 100% confirmed to be true).

my question here is: how dangerous would it be to switch to .13's on a stock electric guitar? i don't plan on downtuning to C or anything like that...the lowest i deal with would be each string dropped half a step.

if you do, just make sure you bring it to a dealer to have the neck reset.
