Thumb slap technique

Unread post by djvt81 » Sat Oct 14, 2006 9:42 pm

I'm currently trying to incorporate the 'thumb slap technique' which Im sure is not the right name for it.

Anyway you hear it in John mayer's version of message in a bottle and many other songs by other artists im sure.

Is any pointers anyone has one how to begin to attempt this technique

like a easy song to start with? or just basic fundementals

When I wanted to learn it I just searched for Slap/Pop in the bass. I don't remember exactly which site I used, but they are all pretty much the same. Just found this one quickly:

Take a look.

It takes some practice, depending on your current level of "right hand skills", but the basic thing you have to put in your mind is:

Your thumb and first finger are always fixed. It's all about a wrist/arm rotation

What in my opinion is one of the most important things to remember is to not let your thumb bounce off the string when you slap it.

For example, slap "through" the E string, letting your thumb come to rest on the A string. You'll cut down on wasted motion, and it'll help to reduce sympathetic vibration.

Holy fuck, anyone have that version of 3 x 5 that he mentions in the video? That'd be sweet to play.

the vaginal fluid they are secreting is the same composition of urine minus the uric acid and phosphorous. i learned that in 11th grade anatomy. btw, sometimes it does have a FAINT smell of Pizzle.

Thanks I watched that video before I wrote the thread. It was helpful.

when using this technique do you slap with the thumb and pick with your middle and index fingers?

there's a pretty thorough lesson on slap/pop technique in this month's guitar player. it's the one with warren haynes on the cover.
