what does the () mean in tablature.
for example smooth rider has (4) in it's tab.

well, if a common harmonic fret(5, 7, 12, 19), it would probably be a harmonic. Judging by the context of that tab, it's an optional note that is either sometimes played, or just sounds fine either way.

Usually the () suggest a grace note, or one that is ocassionally omitted. Harmonics are usually indicated like this: <12> or *12, in my experience.
