Look this is not that hard of a concept to grasp. Yes Neil was right, then and now. There are SOME people in the south that are exactly the way Neil describes them. But, not ALL of them are. Hence, the song is a stereotype, a generalization that cannot be said to apply to everyone in the south. My point Dustin is that SHA took issue w/ the characterization by Neil Young that ALL southerners are ignorant, racists. When in fact not ALL southerners are. Would you like it if I were to call you ignorant or racist based solely on the fact that youre from Alabama? I think not. You would want me to get to know you as a person b4 I made judgements about you, wouldnt you? I think that is what SHA says. Dont judge others based upon a stereotype. You yourself prove the stereotype is not justified, your not ignorant and you are not racist. Why would you not be offended by someone calling you an ignorant racist (which Neil Young does in Southern Man) when they dont even know the first thing about you?

wargs wrote:Look FJ I wasnt trying to call you stupid or ignorant, merely that your reply to my post was sperficial in regards to the context of what I wrote. If this thread was a comparison of the two songs solely on the basis of which is more musically compelling then yes your reply would have been 100% appropriate. However, I did not even attempt to compare the two songs. So by saying that the message is inconsequential in a comparison of the two you totally missed the whole point bc I wasnt even comparing the two.
Dustin, when did I ever say that Southern Man wasnt on point? What I said was that SHA was a defense against the stereotypes and generalizations prostelyized in Southern Man. Whether or not those stereotypes may have actually applied to some in the south at the time does not mean they applied to all. Which I think is what SHA was also trying to point out. After all, if I were to take Neil's word for it then you must be an ignorant, backwoods racist based solely on the fact that your from the south.
dude, you were the one who brought up all this stuff about stereotypes... i think i speak for dustin as well when i say that neither of us care about what most people think about us

for the simple fact that maybe someone might listen to his lyrics and say hey thats me. i mean if you want to talk about they way your talking about i can't say the germans where nazis when hitler was in power because a few wasn't. my point was the fact that most people wouldn't think i could ever say something bad to someone else do to there race but use to all the time and you know what every single white person i knew back then laughed at my joke with out saying anything which shows me that still most white people in the south now still have race comments that shouldn't be said. now if that is still happing to day then just think of how many people back then where doing it and where doing it with out fear from anyone. yes i'm glad that neil young sung his song.
yeah don't bother to read i'm not smart heh

Just for the record, I am NOT calling anyone stupid. I was just pointing out that Neil Youngs song was about the "stereotypical" Suouthern Man. Thats it. I did not mean to offend. I just thought there was the potential for an interesting conversation. By the way FatJ I didnt bring up stereotypes you did.
good for you man, you aren't the stereotypical alabamian
.
Furthermore, Im glad you dont care what anyone thinks about you, but I never said you did. I wasnt talking about you I was talking about Lynyrd Skynyrd and apparently they care about what Neil Young thinks about them.
Anyway Im done, sorry to have offended you guys. That was not my intention at all.

Dustin, glad to hear I didnt offend you. I was just trying to have some fun debating as well. Sometimes its hard to tell how others take what you say w/o seeing them in person.
