12 string help please!!!
Hey everyone, I currently play a normal good old 6 string, but i'm thinking about upgrading to a 12 string and wanted to hear what you guys think of them.
I think this is the one that the store by my house is selling
http://www.ibanez.com/guitars/guitar.asp?model=PF512NT
They have it for $299
So basically, I just wanted to know some of the major differences between 6 and 12 string besides the number of strings (like if they are harder to play and whatnot)
Thanks in advance, have a good one.

12 strings are fun as hell to play, but i would get one only if i truly had an application for it (i got mine to play in church and to record with)
they are slightly more difficult to play than a 6 strings because of they have a wider neck and they are nearly impossible to fingerpick. there are just some things that you can play on a 6 that you cant play on a twelve
so get one if you really want, just dont get rid of your 6[/code]

I would be weary of buying a $300 12-string. The problem is that the cheaper ones have are a hard time staying in tune. Any problems with intonation and playability are magnified with a twelve. My advice would be to hold off and save up some more money before buying one. I had a Taylor 355 for about a year and then I had to sell it. Not a day goes by where I don't miss it.

tell that to tim reynolds..fatjack wrote: and they are nearly impossible to fingerpick.
anyway, id once again have to say Alvarez if youre going for cheap and good.. i dont like/trust ibanez/fender/etc brand acoustics... i like it when my brands are devoted to a certain style..
Alvarez makes a truly great product... check em out.
Fatjack has a nice Alvarez 12er, dont ya?

i have that same 12 string that youre looking at buying, and i got it online for $209... its definitely not a quality guitar but it serves its purpose for me- i mess around with it every once in a while but i play my 6 string 10 times more often.. its nice to have to mess around with and stays in tune ok, not great
i tried adjusting the truss and its solid as a rock though, and i dont feel its worth paying 40 bucks to set up a 200 dollar guitar so i guess im just content with a little bit of bow in the neck, nothing big

I was kinda like you in that I just wanted one to play around with and use for the same songs that I played on a 6string. I found a Johnson 12-string at a local music store for 180$. It is great, it always stays in tune and the action is really good. The only problem I've had with it is that it buzzes on the 13th fret low E string. But for that price it doesn't really bother me. I would say that you shouldn't spend a lot of money on a 12-string unless, like Fat Jack said, you have a reason to play one.
They are a little bit harder to play in terms of picking single note lines. But when you're strumming they sound really cool, really thick. ANd there are certain DMB songs that just sound a lot better with a 12 (JTR, Grey Street, Bartender)
That being said, I love mine. I don't play it nearly as much as my 6 string guitars though. So just be weary about spending too much.

I'm looking at a Washburn d10 12 stringer. it has a solid spruce top and mahagony sides and it only costs like 200-250. I've hear good things about washburns so I'm hopefully going to get to try it out when I go home. but I'm just looking for a cheap 12er, and this thing is solid wood, so you can't beat the price.a anyone ever play this model?

I have a Washburn 6 string, and other than the fact that I need to have the truss rod adjusted, it has the greatest sound I have heard for under $200 (I paid $140). The only thing that I don't like about Washburns is the fret height. My frets are so thick. It makes slides a little painful. The tuning machines are not of the highest quality either. I miss my Madeira and its abalone tuners...I still think for the money they are the best you can get if you are looking for cheap.w0odman wrote:I'm looking at a Washburn d10 12 stringer. it has a solid spruce top and mahagony sides and it only costs like 200-250.
