A boss tremolo pedal would get the fade in and out effect depending on the rate you set it at. I don't know if he uses it on freaker by the speaker but if that the effect you want, check it out

Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

I've yet to see him live. He came to Chicago New Years Eve, but I'm like the only kid who likes KW. I highly suggest picking up 'Sight', his official DVD release; I also have a couple live bootleg DVDs of KW if you want to setup a B&P. If theres no special effects used during the intro, then its just him on his 12 string with DGCFAD tuning. Later in the song though, hes starts looping alot. Heres the most accurate tab of the song I could find http://www.k-dub.org/tabchord/Freeker.txt
just orded the sight dvd with a same goody christmas gift card :D

I just listened to the intro and I think we aren't hearing anything more than panning that ossiclates from one side of the stereo spectrum to the other. I could be wrong though, I only listened to the first 20 secs one time.

He for sure isnt using any kind of weird effects or adjusting anything during the intro to that song. I have seen him play that song at least 10 times. I was at the NYE show, but I didnt see Keller's set.... Only what he played with UM. I think I have seen Keller maybe 15 or so times total live, and all but a couple were from about 5 feet off the stage. I like the DVD but I think the little scenes in between the songs, and the stuff like him rollerblading around gets old after youve seen it a couple times.

I thought he played with the bass dropped down to C usually, not D... And I dont think he does as much anymore anyways. I havent seen him play the 10 string in a long time, too. He has been playing 6-string Martins and Zilla a lot over the last year or so.
