Bottleneck, Slide guitar for beginners

Unread post by goodboy85 » Wed Nov 30, 2005 4:17 am

I need some help.
I just started to play slide guitar and i must say that i really love it.
but it created a lot of questions.

how do you mute the slide notes you don´t need anymore with your right hand?
what tuning/strings do you use?
what exercises do you ? (important)
what songs/artists do you play?

i use an open g tuning at the moment !
thanks a lot.

how do you mute the slide notes you don´t need anymore with your right hand? you need to fingerpick, just tough the strings you want to stop ringing. To mute with the fret hand just mute the strings with the finger behind the slide. This finger should always be at the same level, in "mute position", to perform a mute just lift the slide.
what tuning/strings do you use? Most play in open tunings: Open A, G, D, or E. Keith Richards liked playing in G. Butch Trucks from the Allman Brothers plays everything in open E (even when he's not using a slide). The Grace is Gone intro is in D. Led Zeppelin's version of "In My Time of Dying" is in A, I belive. You can play in standard, too. The What is and What Should Never Be solo is in standard tuning, so is the RHCP Scar Tissue solo . Comes down to personal preference.
what exercises do you ? (important) Just learn the scale positions and improvise. Aim for a consistent, steady vibrato.
what songs/artists do you play? If you want to get really good at slide guitar, learn some Allman Brothers songs. Duane's the best. Clapton is good at slide too, ie "Running on Faith" from the Unplugged album, and "If I Had Possession Over Judgment Day". George Harrison has good melodic lines in his slide playing. John Butler's crazy at slide, as is Ben Harper. There are tons of other good players but I can't think of any more at the moment. Find a good teacher or get a good book.
Sometimes when I reflect on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. I think, "It is better to drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver.

about the muting-put the slide on your pinkie if you don't already (you probably should, so the other fingers are available for playing) and mute with the free fingers as you normally would.

weird, I actually talked to a guy that works at the farm that I work at about and hour ago, and he's going to teach me some slide techniques over the next few months. I'll get back to you after we get together.
