Singing Tips

Unread post by olkskoolpik » Thu Dec 19, 2002 1:24 am

Although I am still relatively new to the guitar a little over a year, i have just recently hit the stage where i can sing a little while i play. I was just wondering if there were anytips u guys could give me for singing, and how to make myself sound better, and also how to keep the melody in the guitar straight from the notes im trying to sing.

well i should say practice a lot....but there's some techniques on how to sing correctly....i dont know them! you should ask Ticohans! he's a very good singer...
the only thing i did to practice singing was taping myself and listening to what i did

i've always thought that recording yourself would be the best way to go about it. However, i've never done it due to lack of recording equipment. if you'll notice, around every chord change dave sings the root note of the chord, a good example is #41. I always pluck the note and then try and match the pitch. once you get the right pitch then you can improvise with your voice a little around the note you are playing. i think tico does it in his covers, and dave always does it.

Yeah dberhnard is pretty much spot on with the vocals. You can usually find the note dave is singing in the chord of the line. One thing i do is actually play alog with the recording but having the volume low enough that i can still hear myself to know when im going off.

The hardest part about singing is coming up with the "pattern", or lack there of, chaos creates music, not though =) I usually figure out my voice pattern before i ever touch a pen or a guitar. Humming does the trick.

Singing Tips

Unread post by Easy E » Thu Jan 30, 2003 5:29 pm

The most important thing for singing is finding your own voice. If you try to imitate the singer whose song you're singing, you wont sound very good. I still can't sing any Dave because I can't singing like him and it sounds hella bad.

I don't necessarily agree. Some guys are very good at imitating other singers voices and can do them justice very well, and sound very good. My cousin can sing identical to Raine Madda - the singer for Our Lady Peace, actually he's probably a better singer. however Dave is extremely hard to replicate, and I've heard very very few people sing and sound like him. anyhoooo, yeah I have a hard enough time just hitting the notes let alone singing well and singing like someone else. And I also disagree that you have to sound like Dave in order to sing his songs well. damn if you hit the notes and don't sound like you're trying out for American Idol than it most likely will sound good.

peace,
Ken

Some of Dave's songs require the ability to play a somewhat complex rhythm and the lyrics are sang not always "on the beat" and it's difficult to sing along. An example is Typical, that's a tough song to learn to sing and play while first starting out.

Search on the net for tips on how to sing better.

The things that work for me are singing from my gut, drinking lots of room temp water, avoiding smoke, booze and coffee.

You will learn how to control you voice with practice, then you'll learn your limitations and how far you can push your voice. Don't try to copy anyone's style, but it may help to sing songs you know by heart as they are the easiest ones to play and sing.
