Time signatures

Unread post by two steps too many » Fri Oct 14, 2005 3:28 pm

Can someone please try to explain time signatures to me in a simple way?? I know that the top number is how many beats are to the bar and the bottom number is the time value of each beat, but I have a hard time truely understanding the bottom number and how to apply it to my music writing and playing.

What does it mean by one beat is a quarter note, or an eighth note?

Thanks guys
