You'll find once you learn chords that it wasnt really memorizing them, and you'll find it alot easier and faster to learn songs if you knew chord types and how progressions work. You should respect them more.
Chords are overated.

WHen I first started playing, I had the same "I don't need to know music" attitude. Playing with tabs is like painting by number.
The more I started to play, I was like...oh I play a G here. Or...hey, that's a D. Even if you think that chords are 'over rated, ' the fact is still, you are playing 'chords.' Eventually, you just get it. Hopefully.
