strum with pick or fingers?

Unread post by erikro » Wed Aug 03, 2005 11:25 am

I have a hard time strumming with a pick. I either hit the strings wrong or the pick slips out of my hand. When I strum with just my fingers i can get through a song fine but I just dont think it sounds as good. I was hoping I could get some insight into what others do.

Thanks
Erik

i usually leave my right index finger nail a little long, and play with my finger.... its jsut more comfotable for me,a dn its easier to switch to finger picking in the middle of a song... though i only use my finger when playing a acoustic...
i like to use my finger becuase the stuff i like to play isnt just straight strumming.... but keep using the pick and you will get used to it

I like to do what I see John Mayer do and that is to keep your thumb and first finger together as if there is pick and just use that. That way you can can between fingerpicking and strumming easily.

mayer is known for his phantom pick technique. He hides the pick in his right hand palm, when finger picking w his right hand. This is pretty easy to do, and when mastered, it will allow you to make a quick and smooth transition from fingerpicking to pick strumming. It does take a little practice to get used to fingerpicking w a pick kinda lodged into your palm. Try it, youll see what i mean. This is what all the real ballers do. Be a baller.

Nice cut and paste.

I know Ive seen him strumming without a pick before though, but he keeps his fingers together as if there is one.

yea. i'm still hesitant to use a pick, but with most dave songs i have to use a pick because my fingers are not as good at hitting clearly the individual notes(strangely enough i can only play LIOG with my thumb, weird) but when i don't use a pick, something i do that's pretty effective i've found is to leave a little space in between my index and thumb and use them to strum(index for downstrokes and thumb for upstrokes.) jack johnson plays some songs without a pick as well(there is a video on brokedownmelodies of him playing without one)
hosting the oscars is like winning the heisman trophy. no matter how you do in the ballgame, or whatever, they can't take it away from you. and even if you kill your wife and an ex-waiter, they still have a hard time taking it away from you

I was just kidding, but I could have sworn you typed out the same paragraph as you did a few weeks ago.
