I never really had any problems with gigs. All through middle school I was in the school band and in 8th grade was in the jazz band. Of course, I was a bit nervous then but over time you get over it. In high school I was in the jazz bands all throughout and our high school was the type of high school that really liked to show off. So we were playing live all the time. Once you get used to being in front of people you wont be as tenative and things will just flow.

that reminds me of the seinfeld skit: "they took a survey and found that the number one fear of humans is public speaking. DEATH is number TWO. people are more afraid to speak in public than they are of dying. this means that if youre going to be a funeral, youre better off in the casket than doing the eulogy"mlb1399 wrote:I have never performed on stage for anyone so both of you have my respect for having the nerves to try it. It takes a lot of courage to do it.
The only analogy I have that might be close is public speaking. I used to be afraid to do it. I got real nervous and would start sweating just thinking about it. After doing it a bunch of times, I have gotten to the point were I have spoken in front of around 300 people. It doesn't even phase me to do it anymore.
Once you get comfortable with what you are doing it will come easier. Keep at it. It can only get better.

Dunno if it's proper at your gigs but when i first started playing in front of people i'd get a decent buzz before i played... Makes your muscles alot more relaxed and you pretty much lose you inhabitions of failing... Don't make it a habit but it will help at first. I noticed that when I get a good buzz and start performing as soon as I start the song i'd get into my own little world. Like I couldn't hear anything outside of my guitar and me singing. Kinda a tunnel vision thing, you forget about whats on the outside.
I really enjoy playing with a good buzz, i seem to play better, sing better, and have alot more emotion come out in my playing/singing. I guess it's that whole release of inhabitions thing.

That's all in your head, of course the booze will take the "edge off" but in reality you're going to lose your abilities the more you drink, especially for me in terms of singing. I can't sing with the range or volume if I booze.bighuk wrote:Dunno if it's proper at your gigs but when i first started playing in front of people i'd get a decent buzz before i played... My usual course is to relax, stretch my body and my voice by doing some warmups before taking the stage. I drink room temp H2O with lime and when I play I fill up a pint glass with Jack and ice. Good times

a beer before the show is kosher, but too many and you'll hurt your potential

Just keep on playing. I have had some pretty sad gigs...playing to as little as one person in the audience...but hey at least there was one person...these things take time and a lot of practice. Live performance is scary. just play from your heart.

And remember, it doesn't matter who's on stage. An empty room is tought to play to, but if you're playing in a packed joint people will be more into the music and more apt to applaud. People in large groups don't feel shy about yelling and clapping.

im not gonna read all the replies, but I fucked up my first time ever playign infrotn fo people. They were all origionals and I kept playing when the song was over, I started back over with the verse again and we were both too drunk to cover it up and we just started laughing.
It was only the second song of the set. After that everythign went ok.
But I realized afterwards, whats the worse that can happen? It wasnt bad at all and it was the worst nightmare of mine forever, and it ended up not matterign at all.

I must say unfortunately when I pick up a guitar in front of people I tend to smoke as well. Next day and a half a pack later I can't even sing a cash money millionaire song on key...KahnTheRevelator wrote:I have 4 beers and 2 cigarettes. Superstition really, but it seems to work. I haven't had a "bad" gig yet......
