Help with Message in a Bottle

Unread post by Rankin? » Tue Jun 07, 2005 8:00 pm

I'm having some trouble learning the John Mayer cover of Message in a bottle off "Any Given Thursday"

I found an awesome tab,( http://911tabs.com/link/?274862 ) but I'm still having trouble nailing the rhythym to Part 2. ( "I'll send an SOS to the world") , as well as making parts 3, 4 and 6 sound anything like what he's playing. If anyone can offer any advice, I'd be really grateful. Actually, if someone can post of video of any of those parts... man, that'd be awesome.

Thanks

im really sure what you need help on, but the chord 2X22xx i think you should use your thumb on the F#-2nd fret E string
For us living any other ways was nuts. with all the goodie-goodies working shitty jobs for bum pay checks, took the subway work and worried about their bills were dead. they were suckers, they had no balls. if we wanted something we just took it, and if anybody complained twice they got hit so hard believe me they never complained again

thanks, I was debating doing that, it's more the rhytym thats messing me up, and I have trouble hearing a lot of the chord changes when he plays it.

thanks, thats a cool site, and I have a feeling that tab is slightly more accurate. when they say "Playing style: Hand" Do they mean he plays it without a pick? because thats what I was doing at first, but then I wasn't sure.

Also, seriously, if anyone want to make a video of this I'd really appreciate it.

Id imagine it means its played with your fingers and not a pick, so yes.

I played this song for a week before I figured out the trick to it. Which area are you having trouble with? Everything except for the intro?

And I use a pick, I got it down right.

EDIT

I just tried it with my hands and it seems to work better
It's really hard to explain the way he plays it, I would make a video of it but I don't have a web cam.

VH1.com used to have a live recording of it up.
not sure if they still do or not.
The key to the rhythm is getting your thumb in the right place to do the "slaps" strong enough and have it prepared to play the next note.
The chords really aren't that hard, making it groove is the key.
