get to know the song (guitar) hardcore. be able to play it with no effort.

next, maybe try some easier songs to sing and play, where there is an emphasised word on a specific part of the riff, or something like that.

you could try talking first, before singing, just try talking (i've heard this helps, i dont personally think so, but give it a whirl)

also, on your saying that you can't sing. trust me, the more you sing the better you get.

and just keep practicing, good luck

no trick to it, just alot of practise and time. It's fustrating I know, but practise doing both is the best advice I can give. There are tutorials on singing on some sites that I would recommend but when you first start to sing while playing (speically as a beginner which i'm just "assuming" you are, I appologize if I'm wrong) it just takes time getting use to

talking while playing can definatley improve coordination needed to sing and play at the same time. I know it helped me when i first started singing, after just being a lead guitar for 5 years.

To help strengthen your voice, try yelling and just making weird sounds with your vocal chords while you play. I've found that singing with emotion is difficult to do while staying in time. You get into a song and you wanna speed up a lot of times. Yelling while practicing helped me with this a little bit.

singing and playing

Unread post by Brent » Tue Jun 07, 2005 1:41 am

I always had a real hard time trying to sing and play. The only way to do it is to keep trying. I learned to sing and play by first learning to play it. And then humming while playing. After doing that for awhile I could recognize where the words are supposed to go. I would start to add in words here and there. It takes a while to get the timing down but it will come. (just like the strumming pattern to crash) :)

The first songs I could play and sing were Have You Ever Seen the Rain, Who'll Stop the Rain, by Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Brown-Eyed Girl by Van Morrison. I chose these songs first because one, I like them, they are pretty easy to learn to play, and the "timing" of the words are pretty uniform throughout the song.

Hope that helps and I don't just sound like a raving lunatic!

Play the guitar part of the tune over and over and over until you can do it with your eyes closed. Play it until you find you can count to 50 (one with every chord change or the 2 times table), then play some more. It may take several months to start, and you'll find you can watch TV while you are playing them chords, you can hold a conversation, it just becomes part of you, like breathing. The brain is a wonderful thing. THEN sing along.

some songs are definately easier than others so i'd actually pick some songs that with each strum you are eccentuating a sylable or word. One of these songs I think is Wonderwall. I learned to sing it about 10 minutes after i learned to play it because the strum pattern goes along with the sylables as far as I can tell. Give that one a shot. As far as other complex songs it just takes alot of practice to where you can completely forget about playing the fret board and just let it flow. Once you get to that point in a song you will probably have minimal trouble picking it up.

Me personally, as soon as I start learning the chords to a song I start breaking it down and structuring riffs with verses and timing in my head. I try to play and sing at the same time AS MUCH as possible to make it second nature to me in the long run. I hardly ever just play anymore.

Theres really no trick to it. Its a matter of how quickly your brain can handle two complex functions at the same time, some people are more adapt to learning how to do this than others, so it comes faster. I found that playing and doing something else at the same time like reading a magazine, counting out loud, watching tv and just playing the tune until your face turns blue can really help out alot. I still have alot of trouble playing and singing someone elses songs. Especially if it involves single note riffs, my feeble little mind just cant handle it! Wonderwall is a good start off song, it will open up some doors for you for sure.

i love that, not that i dont like the others but its almost like you yourself wrote the msuic. for instance, some people are amazed how hard stone is and yes i cant play it and they wonder how he can play and sing it at the same time but i tell them its his music he wrote it its this feeling and so its not hard for him. also i started with the christmas song and i can completely sing and play that... is that easy enough haha

If you can watch TV or read the lyrics and play at the same time then you should be able to sing it........so practice with that a little first.

I learned on easier songs. First I just hummed the LA LAs dave sings on the nature intro, then I sung to watchtower, then progressively harder songs. I've noticed it doesnt matter how complicating the song is for me, its the rhythym that throws off me when singing. So Warehouse and LIOG would seem hard to sings and play but are much easier for me than lets say... ....i dunno, something with a tricky rhythym. ive always had problems with crush.

so i did somewhat of what you said guys, i had a practice for a gig with my cuz and he was singing and i sat and played for him and we went through it a whole lot(grey street i mean). then this afternoon i sat down and played it and then i started singing and amazingly enough i can sing it and play it no trouble at all. and plus i already knew the words form listening to this so a ton and boom it just mixed, although im a bad singer to me it sounded nice to finally be able to. i still come and go during the chorus but otherwise its awesome im ready for more all i can say is just throw more songs at me ha
