John Mayer on a Taylor?
John Mayer on a Taylor?
Given the way that he plays [using his thumb to fret for just about everything] and given the nature of Taylors having thicker than normal necks, this does not equate to a good combination. I have a 414ce and its the biggest bitch ever trying to get this [Neon] to sound right, mainly because the neck is almost too fat to play it well. Has anyone else had similar problems? I am thinking about trading it in for a Martin
at this point because its so damn frustrating.

414ce goodness

He's not saying that Mayer used a Taylor, just that it's frustrating to play Mayer material on a Taylor due to it's thicker necks...although I never knew their necks were thicker.filmdude100cms wrote:ive never seen mayer play a taylor, hmmm always either one of his dm3md's or his signature, or another marth OM, or his fenders.

thats what I thought, thats why I was confused.hcole wrote:I've always been under the impression that taylor had a thinner neck profile than Martin, and most others for that matter.dmbguitar718 wrote:although I never knew their necks were thicker.
As for your thumb hurting you, if youre just starting out trying to use this technique, it hurts regardless of the size of your hands. It took me a while to be able to play songs where I use my thumb and it still hurts if I use it too much, so just keep trying and youll get used to it eventually.

Most taylors have a thicker neck than martins, from what ive played. I actually own a talyor 714, and martin HD28, and the taylor has a thicker neck. But who knows, mayber there are some models that are different.

If you are having that much trouble playing neon I tabbed out a capo 3 version that you dont have to use your thumb. Some people like it the regular way, but I find it easier this way. I'll try and find it.
