Ironically had a similar experience on saturday as well...my sister's boyfriend had a party, and we always jam cuz he has a mini-studio in his basement...he got up and left from playing the drums and i'm sitting there solo with my guitar practicing and everyone comes down to the basement...they heard me practicing from upstairs i guess, so i continued to warm up with a little "unforgiven" acoustic metallica cuz everyone knows the chorus...but i didn't feel nervous until someone requested "Crash" and i look up and there's like 15 or so people in the basement now...I played pretty much without mistake, vocals were good (although i lost my train of thought near the end and snuck in some dave vocal improvs that may have sounded different to the non-dave people) and it was one of the funnest experiences i've ever had with my guitar...my first crowd and first applause as well, and definitely was a little nerve racking to say the least! well worth it, and definitely good motivation to keep practicing!

I think playing for people impresses them to some degree...More if they don't play guitar and EVEN more so if they don't play an instrument. Chicks dig it.

Still, I always feel like I have to justify my playing with a "I've only been playing since December". Maybe its a self-confidence thing, but for some reason I expect everyone to think that I should be much better at guitar than I am.

I think back to when i didn't play guitar and how impressed i was with someone who played...turns out that someone wasn't very good, cuz now i hear them and they suck (they don't practice much) but it is true that it sounds much better to people who don't play an instruments at all...who cares what anybody thinks anyway, i pretend i'm on stage in front of thousands and it's my time to shine...it's fun as hell, yet still a little unnerving

I guess that's the best way to look at it.
