I would work on scales and modes, inlcuding slides and hammer on's and pull off's. As you get more proficient, your speed will develop.

Here is a link on scales and modes: http://guitarnoise.com/scales.php

Here is one on soloing and improvising: http://guitarnoise.com/improvisation.php

Should be something in there to help you out.

For stream, the one you have to know with your eyes closed is D mixolydian. Tim's improv parts in stream do not deviate from that scale, so if you know it like the back of your hand you can pretty accurately recreate tim's sound. Practice by playing two octaves of the scale slowly and then faster and faster. Then, start doing in with your eyes closed. Then you will become proficient enough that you can play the scale at will without thinking about it. Practice a little every day.

You seem to have pretty damn good music theory knowledge. Did you learn on your own or do you have a music background?

I have a pretty good musical background as far as basic theory, borne from playing piano for about six years in elementary school and then four years in wind ensemble playing bass clarinet in high school, but all the really advanced guitar theory stuff I learned myself as I went along, which began when I picked up the guitar and taught myself how to play three years ago this month.

But I still don't know nearly as much stuff as music majors like MWR and fatjack.

I am very jealous of your knowledge based on several posts.

My problem with stream is that I always play it too fast. I play it twice as fast as it's suppossed to be without even noticing how fast I am playing. Does anyone have any exercises that could help me slow my hands down?

hey Batstone,

I quickly put together a few vids, which hopefully don't suck too bad, of me playing the parts of stream. Im not quite done though, its pretty late and i'm gonna get some sleep. Ill do the other parts tomorrow night. Im gonna host it as a zip file, but i have to wait until i get to work tomorrow to post it. I have dial up here at home :(

Honestly, attempting to duplicate anything Timmy does is not going to be easy and honestly to reproduce his tone is nearly impossible unless you've got some serious cake to drop.
