i think anyone who considers themself to be a good guitarist could play hundreds of songs of the top of their head. Once you learn it, it doesnt go away. I can play every dave song, and about 95% of mayer. But these are only a handful of the songs i know. In fact, most songs are easier to memorize than dave, and especially mayer. Mayer has some great guitar songs. As a guitarist of 8 years, i can say that i will never stop learning. Good guitar players can hear a song and pick up on it quick. I'm to the point where i can hear a song and figure out what chords are being played and get an overall assesment of whats going on. Not trying to gloat, but i want to point out that i, by no means, consider myself a pro, or a badass, or even a gifted musician. I just consider myself a good guitar player. Peace, and keep playing

That has more to do with having a good memory than it does playing the guitar. I don't see how memorization skills make you any "better". But thanks for stopping by to enlighten us.

what you're learning are singing songs. they are easily structured by chords. Try learning instrumental songs.

this may seem ironic, but why does everyone seem to put each other down like this? why do you care what kind of songs he learns? maybe he is just proving a point, you dont need to put him down
For us living any other ways was nuts. with all the goodie-goodies working shitty jobs for bum pay checks, took the subway work and worried about their bills were dead. they were suckers, they had no balls. if we wanted something we just took it, and if anybody complained twice they got hit so hard believe me they never complained again

They do it to make themselves feel better. Or they are arrogant. Either way it happens and will keep happening from the usual suspects. Just grin and bear it.

Good job, Tim. I can't wait to seewhere I'm at in 8 years.

EVen Dave and many other artists sometimes have the words or music in front of them whne playing an old song. I remember in one of D & T shows someone yelled out a song & he said he forgot how to play it.

Yeah, Jazz maybe harder but regular pop songs can be hard as well.

Everytime someone posts something that is not agreed upon by other members, they get flamed, or get smart ass coments. I was simply trying to say that is not uncommon for experienced musicians to know hundreds of songs off the top of their head. Chill out. Im not trying to make myself feel better or be arrogant. Am i arrogant by mentioning that i've played for eight years and know hundreds of songs. This is my job. I'm supposed to know how to play alot of songs. That is how i pay my bills while im working on recording my bands album. Knowing hundreds of songs made me enough money to start a recording studio in my apt. But i guess now, im being extremly arrogant for mentioning what i do for a living. Its funny how this site encourages fans to speak their minds and share their experiences with one another, but if you say the wrong thing(ie. mayer is great, dave isnt the best, or "i can play a hundred songs') you get shit for it. We are all fans of music, and we should be fans of eachother.

I said MOST, some of the hardest songs to play are old jazz and blues tunes.
