There are plenty of songs in a major keys that are "sad". It's probably Me by Sting and Clapton is in C but it seems pretty sad or meloncholy to me.Davy28 wrote:Whats an example of a sad song in D major in your opinion?
It's even possible for a song with all major chords to convey sadness.
The whole minor is sad and major is happy thing is what you're told early on to simplify things.

One thing I often notice is that songs in keys that are accidental (sharp or flat) tend to be like tears of joy in a way, like the song Be here to love me (Van Zandt cover by norah jones) is in Ab major but the harmony is so cool that I get choked up everytime I sing and play along.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

I mean keys like C# major or D# majorfatjack wrote:that has nothing to do with the flats in the keyDavy28 wrote:One thing I often notice is that songs in keys that are accidental (sharp or flat) tend to be like tears of joy in a way, like the song Be here to love me (Van Zandt cover by norah jones) is in Ab major but the harmony is so cool that I get choked up everytime I sing and play along.
I can see why it is often a curse to be a music major because you cannot let the music just flow over you emoitionally, you have to dig into it and look at the technical, melodic and harmonic aspects as opposed to the emotional.

So you're saying that if a song is originally in D major but you play it in D# that that song is instantly more joyful? That just goes to show that you dont' know enough about the "technical, melodic and harmonic aspects".Davy28 wrote:I mean keys like C# major or D# majorfatjack wrote:that has nothing to do with the flats in the keyDavy28 wrote:One thing I often notice is that songs in keys that are accidental (sharp or flat) tend to be like tears of joy in a way, like the song Be here to love me (Van Zandt cover by norah jones) is in Ab major but the harmony is so cool that I get choked up everytime I sing and play along.

That's like telling a writer that he's too preoccupied with syntax and grammar.

quit while your behind davy. mwr and fatjack know the shit...
ya.. accidentals.. no one can tell unless with perfect pitch but that isnt what makes it have a "tear jerking" melody. transpose it to the key of C (with no accidentals) and it would be the same way. C D E F G A B may REALLY be C# D# A# but frankly we just labeled them.. music is all relative. its a ratio between the sounds that makes the scales and they cant hold specific moods to them, unless you are talking a different TYPE such as harmonic minor as opposed to major.
