When you think about it, using your left hand for fretting is better because your left hand is naturally more dexterious. (when you're left handed)
Although it doesn't feel as natural at first, its pretty much the way to go IMO.

Although you could be like that one chick who taught herself to play the guitar upsidedown left handed. Now that'd be a kicker. Anyone know who that was btw?

and anyway.. im left handed and play righthanded.
it works fine.
one hand is at a disadvantage no matter if you play right handed or left handed. (or are right handed or lefthanded)

Hendrix didn't do that .. he played a right handed strat stringed for a left handed player, so he played leftie. He could, however, just flip up a right handed guitar upside down and play it ... even donig the bends in the opposite direction. I am pretty sure thats how he recorded "Wind Cries Mary".
Anyway, I'm a leftie but I play right handed guitar. This has certain advantages and disadvantages. Obviously, since I write with my left hand, my fretting hand is the dominant hand so it has always been easier for me to deal with chromatic runs and everything else. However, my right hand, the strumming hand, has always needed alot of work and practice. This is the problem with picking up a rightie guitar when you're a leftie. Normally, the strumming hand should be the dominant hand, but this is not the case in a left handed player, so it takes a lot of practice to build up yoru right hand. Not that it can't be done, but you're generally always having to surpass that initial hurdle. There is also a speculation that if you are a leftie and play a right handed guitar, you will early on inevitably reach a certain level of playing where it is very difficult to progress past. But thats just speculation IMO.

Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking. Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away. Forget about the guilty, we are innocent instead, for soon we shall all find our lives swept away.

whoever says that you cant play a right handed guitar lefty without restringing is wrong.
Thats how i play, with the low E on the bottom and i have no problems. I can play all chords smoothly and i havent run into any problems. Soloing is a little different but it gives a more unique song.
So ya, just thought id let you know that it is possible and not all that difficult to be honest

It's called cotton pickin'. If you started playing that way then embrace it is the advice I've heard.i am sam2 wrote:that is quite impressive. how do you play a G? how do you mute the high strings on power chords? how do you play the first part of granny?1eyed_jack wrote:whoever says that you cant play a right handed guitar lefty without restringing is wrong.

the granny intro is a little tough so i just play it with the normal D, but for power chords i just strum where i only hit those notes or for certain power chords my hand natually mutes every string i dont want to hit so that works out good

Late in life, Cotten received many honors including: The National Endowment For The Arts National Heritage Fellowship Award in 1984, the same year she won a Grammy Award for Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording for "Elizabeth Cotten Live!" Recorded when she was 90 years old.

i'm sure hendrix restrung his guitars...i used to think he didnt, but i noticed on many (so many) vids he had his strings in the right position...
anyway, i'm leftie too, and i started playing guitar left handed, but my guitar teacher made me change that...so now i play like a right handed...someone told this before: it's easier for a leftie to play right handed because your left hand is much more dexterious
