Alright, lately ive been playing with this dude, who is a really good guitarist, and ive written a few progressions and we are trying to work them out and do something with it. But when he goes to solo it doesnt sound good at all, he is just everywhere basically with no idea or so it seems. How do i go about telling him to back off without sounding like an asshole. Maybe I am just being a jerk, but i listen to the playback after we record it and while we are playing and i just want to be like what the fuck was that? Any advice or previous situations you have had could help me would be nice.
Thanks
The Lead Guit just goes f#*$ing crazy

or you joking? if this is any normal guy, you telling him to calm down a little bit with the lead won't offend him. tell him that you're trying to help him, and that you're telling him something that other people wouldn't have the courage to tell him.
whats the worst that could happen? he'll storm out and say "FUCK YOU!" haha.

If you ask respectfully to tone it down a little bit so you can hear what's going on that should be fine, right? You're not being a dick, to learn, everyone has to take criticism, it's often how we learn - form our mistakes.

I would lay out the song with him. Go over the structure of the song before you play it so you are both on the same page when playing. Give him nods to indicate where he should fill in, nod again when it's time to finish it up. I do that on stage quite a bit if it's a new song and I have no clue what Im doing with lead.
