How is $60 an hour for guitar lessons?
I've been looking into guitar lessons, and I was suggested this guy. I called him up, and got the lowdown. He said it was $60 for a 1 hour lesson. How is this price?

1st off, i cant imagine youd need guitar lessons.
but, for people in my area, a college kid charges like 22 1/2hour, and some seasoned guys charge 30 1/2hour. 60 top end, but if hes good thats about right

I pay $20/half hour 1 time a week. I think it is a great price. My teacher played for Motown, played with Ted Nugent. He also studied with Christopher Parkening under Andres Sergovia, who is considered by most one of the greatest classical guitarists ever.
So I would say that you either live in an expensive area, or he has some major credentials, or he is charging too much.

I think I paid around that when I took a lesson a couple years back. That was in S.F. though which is very expensive. I knew instantly that he wasn't the right teacher so I only went once.
That's why you should be absolutely clear about what YOUR goals are with whatever teacher you're thinking about. Make sure they know what level your at and where you want to go. I made the mistake of being too timid. I should have said "no I don't want to learn the 12-bar blues. I want to learn...".

don't leave us hanging

Whatever I wanted to learn back then. It was a couple years ago so I don't remember. I think I was just starting to get into the fingerpicking stuff, a little classical. I searched for a classical guitar teacher afterwards because I wanted to have really sound technique. So much for that.
I'm able to learn without a teacher. Not saying that's a bad or good thing it just is.
Playing with other people is far more important. That's the void I'm trying to fill at the moment.

i took lessons for a couple months a little while ago. paid 25/hour. 15/half hour.
in response to mwr's comment about playing with other people... damn good advice. that is something i also need to start doing. playing with other people keeps the ambition going, for me. playing with far better guitarist than me inspires me to play as much as possible, while learning from them.

A good teacher is going to take you a lot farther in a shorter period of time(if your diligent in your practicing). Providing instruction in technique, performance, and muscianship.
It's up to you to evaluate if he's the right guy and worth the money. It also depends greatly on what your going to a teacher for.
Someone above said, "What do you need a teacher for?"
You should never stop learning or be unwilling to play something new. Knowing lots of styles will greatly boost your jamming and writing ability, even if they aren't in your current mode of playing now.
