how do you know what scales go with what chords?

What scale? The scale that is the Key of A.
Meaning.. A B C# D E F# G#

You can look at the fingerings i put in the Method by Gumbo thing lol.
Just use those fingerings.. that would help you out.. remember, the R must alight with the A! on the fretboard.

Basically, is the chord major or minor, then play that scale. It can get more complicated, but that's all you need to know. Then imagine how the key of scale juxtaposes with the chord- if you're playing an E5, for example, you know a little run in B is going to sound good.
Stay with me, safe and ignorant.

That is the complex way of doing it. Jazz musicians have to be on top of the changes but rock, blues, and pop progressions can usually be grouped into a common key so you don't need to be switching scales with every chord.
5(power) chords allow the most room for error/experimentation because they don't have a third which means they're actually perfect intervals not chords. If you want a "jam section" you could play a couple of power chords with attitude and it would open up your soloing possibiities.

LEARN YOUR MODES. scales are great..but suck if you're just running up and down scales during your solos. MODES are key to owning faces.
I like this kid's thinking , a texan no less.. :) To expand a bit ill just say that learning modes is going to let you solo anywhere you want on the fretboard and move around as freely as you want to. I dont know any basic jazz websites but when i get back to austin i can tell you about some good books... I knowat least a few of the people on the boards have the same jazz books as i do so they're pretty good, just dont remember who.
..ill look into it in about a week.

I've been reading up on some theory and taking notes and stuff and in an attempt to try to understand how "what key is this song in?" works I tried it on All along the watch tower

the version with the chords Am, G, F, C, D, is it in the key of G because of the F# in D chord?

no... its in Am...

you could say its in Cmaj also.. it just doesnt work as well.

hmm why is that? do you look at the chords instead of the individual notes in the chords and since there's no sharp it's in Cmaj/Am?

why is what? why is it a minor scale?

because while C and A(natural)minor have the same notes, A is the tonic in Am, which means the basic feel of the song revolves around the A.

Oh sorry for being vague, by why I mean why/how is it in the key of Am/C? Do you look at the keys of the chords rather than the individual notes that make up the chords? because C/Am has no sharps right? so the chords having no sharps is how you came up with that i'm guessing? or i'm way off :(

well.. a little bit of both... where is there a D in watchtower? im pretty sure theres not one anywhere.. the D kinda screws things up because it throws in an F#.. thats a bit wrong.. i dont know where the C is either, but it could work...

Am G F

ACE GBD FAC

ABCDEFG

besides that F# in the D that i dont know exists, it fits in C/Am.
