Play scales or play what you feel?

Learning, scales, chords, modes,etc considerably opens
up the pallet of colors that you have to choose from when you go to express your self, jamming, writing, and performing.
You'll never go wrong learning more music theory.
It's what you do with it after that makes it magical.

ya but if you don't know scales then you aren't limited to those colors.Sure you might end up witha shitty looking color, but it also gives you the potential to create a beautiful color that is unique.

You just don't get it. Every color you could possibly create can be described with theory. Every color has already been created, it's how you mix and present them that matters.

thats not beautiful.. its lazy. partly true.. but partly false.
No one learns scales to play scales. (he says he doesnt care if someone can play a scale)
NO ONE *plays* scales.
You use the scales as a guide so when you are jammin in a solo you have an idea of what frets to mess with and which will sound like a fart.
And thats just one use for scales of course. All im saying is.. you should always play what you feel... but theory is so useful... and to not learn it (or even try) (if you take your instrument very seriously) is a little lazy.

i agree theory is useful, but i also see way too many cookie cutter bands that play sclaes and call it a solo. Anyone in the world can learn a scale and play it, but music is all about expressing yourself. Neil young is like an abstract artist, his solos may not seem conventional but that doens't make them bad, it makes them unique
