So I want to learn theory

Unread post by Reckless » Sat Oct 23, 2004 6:07 pm

I want to start learning my scales, chord theory, modes, and what not. Can anyone recommend a good book for an introduction to all these things? I went to a Barnes and Noble's today but couldn't find anything decent. I know there have been some good websites over the matter posted in the past but I like having a hard copy in front of me. I was looking into buying a book online or something. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Might be the same concept, but no, ours are old because my school is poor

The Guitar Handbook by Ralph Denyer. Have it and love it. Excellent book!

I have book 1, and it's pretty good. Book 1 is extremely elementary, but I would reccommend it to any beginner. I think one of my biggest regrets in college was no taking a music theory class. I'm sure that would have made trying to learn it a ton easier.

Homeboy said it earlier. The guitar handbook is an absolute must if theory is what you want to learn. It's the most error free book I've ever come across for guitar. Scales, modes, intervals, inverted intervals, theory, rythms. You could even build a guitar from this book and rig up your gig.

I got this yesterday:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... s&n=507846
from B&N.

It's a very good book if you want to learn how to read and play from sheet music (rather than tab). My girlfriend plays piano and we've always wanted to play together so this should fun to learn. I've always wanted to learn how to read music anyways.

I went to a couple of music stores and no one had Beginning Jazz Guitar by Jody Fisher, so I guess I'll have to buy it online.
