ive got this great riff thats incredibly simple to play, but having 2 guitars play the same part isnt good. i can play a lot of dave including some of the harder stuff, but i dont know anything about theory. how can i find cool chords (or notes) to have a 2nd guitar play or to even have me just mix in?

A real easy way would be to post the chord here and ask someone else. Or, if this is hypothetical, then you might wanna try looking on some sites like olga.net or mxtabs.net for chord finders. They both have some weird stuff like that.

Well, here's what you could do, man: Figure out what notes you are actually playing in the riff. From these noted you will probably be able to determine what key the thing is in. This site can help you out with that (I'd tell you but you said you wanted to do it yourself :D ) http://www.donnybravos.com/ndlessonarch ... heoryChart

After you've done that, you can determine what chords you can play in that key. Root notes could help you out here too. Then you could use some variations like dominant chords or minor 7's etc. Just try to make sure that everything is basically in the correct key. Hope that helps, man.
