I have messed around with it for about 3 years, but finally got serious about it 8 months ago. I was typical person who would go and buy a guitar, play it for a few weeks then not pick it up for a couple months. I followed this pattern for 2 years, playing for 2 months not playing for 4 months. What helped me, is to start taking lessons. I know a lot of people on here are self taught and that works for them. I personally feel by taking lessons, I am held accountable for my progress by my teacher. So that may help you get serious about it. My only advice is that if you do want to take lessons, find a person that's willing to teach you what you want to learn and not what they want you to learn. I took lessons from another guy who was teaching me old mcdonald and crappy songs like that. It is definitely more motivating to work on songs that you like.
I appreciate all the responses and the warm welcome to the boards. I am sure I will say something lame in the future and you can burn me then. I picked up the guitar again the night I posted this and have played every night since....forgot how much it hurts the fingertips. Thanks again for the replies/advice.
