Yes, I think playing in a band is very important in any musicians development but a great guitarist might have been there and done that. There's a lot of crap that comes along with being in a band and if you eventually feel more satisfied in a solo setting I don't see anything wrong with it.
Not everyone wants to rock out with a band either. There are people(I consider myself one) who prefer something more intimate.

nah i know there are a BUNCH of guys clearly good enogh to go solo, and thats obvious because so many make a living off it. keller williams is one of my favorite musicians solo or not. anyway, just because youre good enough for a solo gig doesnt mean youre better than being with a band. and its not just the rhythm section that makes a band good. look at dmb, sure they have a good rhythm section, but leroi and boyd and butch(tho hes sometimes rhythm) add so much to the songs. you can be a great guitarist but if you cant open up holes for other guys to come in, youre second tier.
however, to your other point, IF a guitarist HAS been there and done that, then solo work might be ok, but if not, get with a band first. theres nothing wrong with being solo its just that its really, in my opinion, only half music. music is half talent and half chemistry, if youre not playing with anyone youre basically making yourself the spotlight and you dont need to take any considerations of other instruments, etc.
it might be that i think all this because im a bassist and very very very few bassist can go solo.....

either way, why would you go solo? touring by yourself would suck. id much rather have a group of guys who love hangin out together

I started playing when I was like 11, and played nothing but Dave for the first few years. So I guess I played a lot of Dave at 14.

I get complimetns when I throw some chops down on the set at GC, but I never take them seriosuly. Most of the time they are blwoing smoke up your ass. I try to take compliments as lightly as possible. If you take them seriously, youll "know" you are better then what you are, you wont do well with a band.

When you go solo most of the time you dont play by yourself. You play with other musicians, just its not technically a band cause you play with different people all the time. yeah that part was a joke...i guess if youre a solo musician makin lots of money you can take your friends with you regardless of if they play instruments...

And I'm very much into the guitar as a solo instrument so I can see where we differ in our opinions.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to be in a band but the oppurtunity has yet to present itself. I'm in full agreement that it can do nothing but make you a better musician.
My problem is I wouldn't want to join some band that didn't share my musical tastes just to get my feet wet. I guess I should suck it up.

I don't think anyone is "good" until they are writing their own music.

That's just my opinion, I could be wrong. But being told what to play isn't what I think makes you good. Once you write some serious stuff, then I think you can be good, but as long as you sit on the computer and read tabs you aren't, in my eyes, great, or anything. It's impressive that you can play that stuff, but I don't think you should get an ego from it.

I completely agree. But I also think that when you do play other peoples stuff you shouldnt use tabs. One reason is half of the time they are wrong (this site is the most accurate one ive found) but you should do it by ear and video. It makes you a better guitarist. Whenever your stuck use tabs as a guide. Thats exactly what I do. I write my own music also. I've got about 7 written down and about 3 writing themselves in my mind, if that makes sense to anyone but me. Writing and recording has made me a better guitarist. I can record myself and fix the mistakes I dont hear when I play. Recording I think is another that makes you a better guitarist, though you can still be good and not have recordings but having equipment shows your serious about it.

I respectfully disagree...I started writing my own stuff, exclusively, my first week of playing, and many of my friends can attest that I absolutely sucked.

When people say "damn, you're good" and it's an original you are playing, then, and only then, in my opinion, are you talented. You need to be somewhat well rounded and not just play other peoples shit.
