George and Eric

Unread post by Ranting Thespian » Sun Sep 12, 2004 2:48 am

They both grabbed the guitar without natural talent, and with work and dedication, they became 2 of the best guitarists known. Of course, I am talking about the two buds, Eric Clapton and George Harrison. In the 60s, they met and became best friends, even with George's wife leaving for Eric, and then left Eric. Eric was also the main man in putting on the Concert For George (a year after Harrison's death death).

Now, with these two great guitarists, there is one question

Who is the better guitarist? George or Eric?

Personaly, I can't decide, so what do you guys think?

this one should be clapton by a landslide if youre asking "better" which, if i can read correctly, you are. but people may like george harrison more because he was a beatle.

George had great fills and leads in the Beatles work. As a solo artist, Eric is more renowned cause that's where he made the name for himself. It seems George didn't want to put a premium on fame, just wanted to make great music. I like George better.

Eric cannot play sitar, but I fail to see what that has to do with anything. Personally I like Eric better, but I still love George. Eric is definitely better than George, if that's what you're asking, but who someone likes more is a matter of opinion.

I did get another George Harrison album recently. It was George Harrison - Live in Japan. The kewl thing about it, Eric Clapton is on EVERY song, playing and singing. You can also hear Eric and George bouncing solos off eachother on While My Guitar Gently Weeps. It's also from 1991. Plus, after hearing it, it is one of the best live albums I have heard.

clapton for sure....i think the recording of while my guitar gently weeps....was originally recorded with clapton doing the solos. wasn't it clapton that came up with the inspiration for george's #1 here comes the sun?

Time to set the beatles facts straight ;)

While the Beatles were recording the White Album, George asked if Eric could come in and play on his track. One of the solos in the song is Clapton (the other os George). That's that story, nothing much more, lol.

Now, when the Beatles started becoming more of a hassel than just writing music (bills, contracts, and other stuff at Apple Corp., around 1968) he took a break and went over to Clapton's place for the night. He and him had a great time haning out til the wee hours. Now, early in the morning, George borrowed Eric's guitar, and went out into his garden. Then, the sun came up, and George felt so much more at peace then he had been feeling lately. So basicly the song came about as an escape song, to get out of everything to a simplier theme.

That's your beatles lesson for today, kids :) .

Harrison is more creative, more interesting and more enigmatic then Clapton in my humble opinion.

Harrison is eternally underrated and unfortunately only after his death did he get some of the credit he has been due.

Slowhand knows blues, that's great. Not my cup of tea, nor the Yardbirds, nor Cream for that matter.

I didn't say it had anything to do with it. I was just curious. I'm thinking about buying a sitar.

Harrison is better at writing pop-hooks. Clapton is better at purist blues. I didnt vote.
