This is the place to talk about guitar playing not done by Dave! Topics about techniques, styles, theory, and other guitarists go here.

alternate picking (how?)

Unread post by Pickles » Mon Apr 28, 2003 1:49 pm

ive been working on it, but im having a lot of trouble. its so hard to actually have a rhythm for it when trying to do it a certain amount of times. ie the stone - either too much or too little. im trying to rest my hand on the bridge, and i think that does help more, but im trying to figure out how to do it best. any suggestions?

I hold the pick more up and down and also hold it very close to the tip when I do alternate picking. Like in the stone, hold the pick so the edge of it is pointing at the center of your face. Thats how I play it at least and deffinatley hold towards the end of it then for the strums flatten the pick back out and strum normally then back to the other way for the picking. (Please dont turn this into a "you do/do not pick for the stone, thats how I and others play it and it sounds fine.) Hope that helps.

I've found that playing dave songs is not conducive to learning alternate picking. Dave hardly every does it (I know there are some exceptions, ie stone,) and for the longest time I had some trouble getting dave's rythmic style down because I would alternate pick everything. To get the precussive sound and the "slaps" dave gets, you really need to attack your guitar with downstrokes. I think the best way to learn alternate picking is practicing scales...I know its boring, but you will pick it up super quick and you'll improve your speed at the same time.

I dont think either one of us was trying to imply that at all, just using The Stone as an example cuz it uses alternate picking.

wow...guess I should read a tad closer to what I quote...I personally think that playing/learning Dave IS VERY conducive to learning all sorts of picking...

I know dave alternate picks, but its more in a strum fashion than a lead fashion. While I agree that playing dave does help you learn some unique ways to pick, I dont think that it helps you learn alternate picking in a traditional sense. Im talking about more of a lead/solo type deal I guess. If you take lessons, you learn that you should ALWAYS alternate pick. There are plenty of dmb songs that I do not, where I technically can and should. ie: liog, most of recently, satellite, etc.

I didn't know that people don't alternate, I always do, depending on how quick the playing is naturally

just something that I have always worked on and now it is natural, I would have to concentrate to use all downstrokes.
