My poor thumb....

Unread post by Boyd » Mon Aug 09, 2004 10:49 am

When I play guitar after a couple of songs I get this strong pulling pain right between my thumb and index finger on my fretting hand that keeps me from playin alot of stuff. My fingers never hurt from stretchin but it's always my thumb....damn, anyways is that normal or am I doin somethin wrong?

I get the same thing but for a different reason. MY guitar teacher is an oldie and is trying to get me to learn barre chords with my thumb which i find very hard.

fuck that, that sounds terrible, Im all for learning how to use your thumb to fret the low e at times but not with barre chords.

and boyd, as for it being sore, it will go away with time, just keep practicing

Well, it may be that you're grasping the neck awkwardly and it's putting a lot of pressure on a certain area of your hand. I would say if it doesn't go away with time look into rotating your wrist a little farther away from you.

that part of my hand always hurt when playing barr chords. it will get better though, trust me. it just takes time and practice. and yeah, fuck playing barred chords with your thumb on the low E, that may work for some, but it can't for everybody.

For barr chords, its an endurance thing. your thumb has to get used to the constant strain. If you really want to practice barr chords, learn flake by jack johnson. That song is ALL barr chords.

Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

playing barre chords with your thumb is pretty tough. i learned from billy corgan and it flows nicely for me. ofcourse i learned my barred chords originally that way so it was normal for me. i can play both ways now and i'll say that the thumb barre chord is useful for a select few songs so don't go playing all your barre chords that way.
