is there an easy way to explain what key a song might be in? some of you mightve taken a look at the trapt thread i made, and i started working on some stuff and i found one song was in the key of A, so i tried the A powerchord and that was right, then found a few other chords that were in a song. i just found another song in Am. also any way to tell which chords are in the key without memorization?

hehe...I just feel it out...no time to think when improvin...you just need to build your ear for music...I started out by figuring out #41 with Am, Bm, Em, D...and I was so proud...at 11 mind you...anywho, our ear is the biggest part of enjoying playing music...

...other than that, think notes...they either go half or full steps in a key, so when you do like A, the Bm will work...C etc...I think that is right...I don't know...I just feel the mad vibes man *as i put on my black beatnick hat*...

well in A minor there is A minor, B diminished, C major, Dm, Em, F, G.....and like 50 others :P those are the basic ones...i guess? i think you do just have to memorize them. it's not that hard though, because each minor has a corresponding major key (Am's is C). of course, you can memorize chords and modes and things untill you are dead, but you can learn the basics pretty easily....

i found it easier to memorize what notes are in the key. not the chords. then you can just make up the chords with the notes. and it breaks it down to the simplest form. i'd say bust out a keyboard and/or do some written excersizes just to remember the notes. once you got that, scales and chords become easy.

when i am listening to a song i can play about 4 notes and figure out what key it is in based on that. and then i can pick out a little solo or riff based on that. but it used to take the whole 8 notes of a scale for me to be sure.

i took music theory I in College and that helped a lot. i suppose you could get a book or something to teach yourself. it really wasn't that hard. i just never would have learned it if i hadn't been forced to by the class.
